A college website has more audiences than almost any other: current students, prospective students and parents, faculty, and visitors from other institutions. Each comes looking for something different. For the official website of Government College Borda (gccem.ac.in), the challenge was organising a wide range of academic and administrative information clearly while keeping the professional standard expected of a government institution.

Structure first

We started with the information, not the visuals. Academic departments and faculty profiles, courses offered with syllabus details, an announcements and news section, an event calendar for workshops, seminars and cultural events, a photo gallery of campus life, and a student resources section with forms and downloads each have a clear place.

That structure means a student looking for a form, a parent checking a course and a visitor looking for directions each have an obvious route from the homepage.

Built to work on every device

Most students check notices on their phones, so the site is fully responsive, built with HTML, CSS, Bootstrap and JavaScript. The contact form and campus location map are easy to use on a small screen.

Search-friendly from the start

An SEO-friendly page structure helps the college's departments, courses and notices be found on search engines — important when students search for a course before they know which college offers it.

From website to college software

A website publishes information. Running student services — certificates, approvals, attendance, exams and fees — needs software behind it. That is the gap our college ERP, EduServe, is built to fill, and the two can work together: the website for the public, the ERP for the office.
